Job Description
About The Opportunity - 12-month fixed-term - start date 20th of July 2026 to 30th of July 2027

Mental health is a key issue for New Zealand rangitahi, and there is a wide disparity for those who have access to mental health services and those who do not. The school psychologist role is a highly successful mechanism to address this, with Fresh Minds providing primarily clinical psychologists to several Auckland schools that rate high on the social deprivation index.
Working in schools provides a great opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary environment, providing on-the-ground support to rangitahi who are typically harder to reach. The job is not limited to providing therapy either, with the school psychologist providing support to school colleagues, both to health and teaching staff, group therapy and presentations to wider student audiences. There is a great opportunity to connect with students and staff within the school context. The work is both remedial and preventative.

Our school-based psychologists are part of the Fresh Minds wider team, with offices in Ellerslie, Manukau and NorthWest Auckland. During the school term, they operate out of School Health Centres working alongside other health professionals, including registered nurses and GP’s and come together as a team during the term break.

This role will be working at Avondale College in the Auckland district, starting Term 3.

The successful candidate will have the following key skills/attributes:
  • A registered Psychologist with a current Annual Practising Certificate.
  • A minimum of 2 to 4 years' experience working as a Psychologist.
  • Comprehensive clinical experience in modalities such as Motivational Interviewing, ACT, CBT, DBT and/or FACT.
  • Experience working in a mental health setting (primary or secondary), undertaking contextual assessments, child, youth and family-focused interventions, and providing youth-focused talking therapies.
  • Training and support are provided for early career psychologists and for psychologists planning to return to the workforce.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build productive working relationships with external and internal stakeholders.
  • A passion for improving equitable health outcomes for young people within Tāmaki Makaurau and Aotearoa, New Zealand.
